Fog sweeps in from the Pacific Ocean most summer evenings, covering our Sonoma Coast vineyards like a giant cold blanket. Lingering through mid-morning this fog cover greatly extends the grape ripening process and produces Pinot Noirs of great distinction. The Pinot Noir for this wine comes from the Petaluma Gap, a distinct growing region within the larger Sonoma Coast AVA. Our two vineyard sources—Catapult and Diamond Pile—are located just 4 and 8 miles from the winery. Despite their close proximity, these sites experience noticeably cooler conditions. The Petaluma Gap is defined by its afternoon winds and persistent fog, creating a long, cool growing season ideal for flavor development. As a result, grapes from this area are often harvested weeks later than those in nearby Carneros. The vineyards are planted to a mix of Pinot Noir clones in clay loam soils layered over compacted volcanic ash and rhyolite. These shallow soils promote vine stress, leading to lower yields and greater fruit concentration. The 2023 vintage was exceptionally cool, marked by a wet spring, an unseasonably cool summer, and a mild fall. These conditions required significant vineyard attention to achieve ripeness and prevent disease. The reward was fruit with remarkable flavor intensity and depth, even at lower sugar levels—yielding wines that are both powerful and refined.
